Silicone Wedding Rings in South Africa: The Complete Guide (Sizing, Safety, Who They Suit)
Why South Africans are swapping metal for silicone, how to size one at home, what to look for, and which ring suits your life.
I wore a metal wedding ring for exactly one training session before a teammate told me a story about a scrum-half and a fence. I haven't worn metal since. This is the guide I wish I'd had: what a silicone ring is, who it suits, how to size it without a jeweller, and what separates a good one from a R40 one.
Why silicone instead of metal
A metal ring under load doesn't bend. It cuts. Degloving injuries, where the skin is stripped from the finger, are common enough that ER doctors have a name for them and rugby, climbing and construction have a rule about them. Silicone breaks away under extreme force. That is the whole point: it protects the finger, not the ring.
- Athletes: rugby, CrossFit, climbing, cycling, gym. The ring stays on, the finger stays attached.
- Hands-on work: electricians, mechanics, nurses, chefs, construction, farming. No conductivity, no snag, no bacteria trap.
- Water and travel: ocean, pool, hiking. Lose a R199 ring, not a R30,000 one.
How to find your size at home
You can't try a ring on through a screen, so we give you three methods on the size guide:
- Measure a ring you already wear. Inside diameter in millimetres, match it in the chart.
- String and ruler. Wrap a strip of paper around the base of the finger, mark the overlap, measure the length, divide by 3.14.
- Convert your letter size. UK/SA letters map to our numbered sizes in the chart.
Between sizes? Go up. Silicone stretches slightly and a fractionally loose ring is safer than a tight one. And if it's wrong, exchanges are free within 30 days.
What to look for
- Medical-grade silicone. Hypoallergenic, no nickel, no smell.
- Breakaway design. The ring should tear before a finger does.
- Profile. A low, rounded inner edge doesn't pinch. Thin enough to forget, thick enough to see.
- Colour that lasts. Cheap rings fade and go tacky. Ours don't.
Men's and women's ranges

Do people wear them as their actual wedding ring?
